Driving Record Points

Points will be assigned to your driving record if you are found guilty of a moving violation:

  • 3 points – 1mph to 15mph over the speed limit
  • 4 points – 16 or more mph over the speed limit
  • 3 – 4 points – violation of a posted speed limit on an elevated structure
  • 4 points – racing on the highway

If speeding becomes a bad habit for a driver, that driver’s  license can be suspended for:

  • 30 days – accumulate 12 points within 12 months
  • 60 days – accumulate 18 points within 24 months
  • 6 months – accumulate 24 points within 36 months

By completing a Defensive Driving course, such as the one offered by Driving University (an Idaho State approved online defensive driving school), you can receive a 3-point reduction in points that have already been assessed on your Idaho Driving Record.  You can take the class and reduce points once every 3 years.  Completing a class will remove points, but the conviction will remain on your Idaho Driving Record indefinitely.

You must successfully complete Driving University’s online Defensive Driving Course and submit your Certificate of Completion before your driver’s license is suspended.  You may also want to remember that an accumulation of points on your Idaho Driving Record corresponds to an increase in your car insurance premium.
