Fines and Penalties for Running a Red Light

In Idaho a traffic ticket is called a “uniform citation” and is dealt with by the magistrate division of the district court.  Misdemeanors are handled in the court of the county where the infraction occurred.  When you go to trial the state will be represented by a prosecuting attorney.  The judge will determine the fine and you will also have to pay any court costs.  If you decide not to pay, you might end up in jail with a fee of $5 per day until you pay your fines.  Sometimes community service can be substituted in place of the fines.  The state of Idaho does not consider minor traffic offenses crimes, but they are considered to be civic public offenses.  Penalties range from $10 to $141.50.
