How is Your Driving Record Used?

Idaho Driving Records are used primarily to keep track of your driving history.  All traffic violation convictions and the points associated with them are housed on your Idaho Driving Record.

The Idaho DMV will use your driving record to determine if suspensions or revocations are in order:

  • 12 to 17 points in any 12 months will result in a 30-day driving suspension
  • 18 to 23 points in any 24 months will result in a 90-day driving suspension
  • 24 or more points in any 36 months will result in a 6-month suspension

The Idaho DMV will also use your driving record to determine when warnings should be issued to drivers who are accumulating points quickly.  These warning letters are sent at the following junctures:

  • When eight (8) to eleven (11) points are accumulated in a twelve-month period
  • When fourteen (14) to seventeen (17) points are accumulated in a twenty-four month period
  • When twenty (20) to twenty-three (23) points are accumulated in a thirty-six month period

Your Idaho Driving Record is also used by auto insurance companies to determine your risk level.  If your Idaho Driving Record is indicative of dangerous or careless driving behavior, you will pay higher premiums and discounts are denied.
