Reasons to Take the Course
Drivers may take an approved Idaho Defensive Driving course once
every 3 years to remove up to 3 points from their Idaho Driving
Record. A driver can do this prior to a driver’s license
suspension in order to avoid the suspension. However, once your
license is suspended you cannot enroll in an Idaho Defensive Driving
course for point reduction, so be sure to successfully complete an
Idaho Defensive Driving course before a driver’s license suspension is

Who Teaches the Course?
The Idaho Transportation Department requires that Defensive Driving
Instructors “be certified by the Idaho Department of Education as a
Driver and Traffic Safety Education instructor, or the National Safety
Council, American Automobile Association’s program (AAA), American
Association of Retired Persons (AARP), or an equivalent program, as

Idaho Defensive Driving Instructor
Anyone who is cited for a moving violation in the state of Idaho
will have points assigned to their driving record. The points
stay there for three years and if you get more than 12, your license
will be suspended. By attending an approved defensive
driving/traffic school you can reduce your number of points by 3.
